Halong Bay

We have had a wonderful time in Halong Bay. Sailing around spectacular limestone karsts rising out of the South China Sea, on an excellent boat with private double cabins with tiled bathrooms. After a lunch of fresh tiger prawns, crayfish, octopus and grilled fish we relaxed on deck and then when the boat stopped we all went kayaking - our first time but it was very stable and we enjoyed it. Sea kayaks are apparently bigger and more stable than the small ones you see on TV doing white water racing. Unfortunately Iain had decided not to risk losing his glasses so couldn't see much and I had to yell steering directions but he still veered to the right! The sea was warm but there are so many boats in the bay it is beginning to get polluted and the current was strong so we didn't swim much. We had sea food again for dinner including stuffed crab and various prawns and fishes prepared in different ways and after a fairly reasonable night's sleep we sailed on to moor up and visit the largest cave yet discovered in the karsts. Unfortunately the boat had to dock at Halong Bay before midday so that was all we were able to do - we were hoping to go kayaking again! We also had to have lunch at 10.45 which seemed a bit strange but the food was so good that we coped! Once back in Hanoi (3.5 hrs drive) we repacked and sent a parcel of clothes etc to Hilary (just in case it turns up before we get home) and all went out for a meal in the evening. Today we went to say hello to Uncle Ho (Ho Chi Min) as he is now returned from his makeover in Russia. He looks good for someone dead for forty years! Then we visited the Museum of Fine Arts and the History Museum - both excellent and very interesting. We're back at the hotel again now and going out for a meal together before we catch the train at 11pm, so that's all for now. Lots of love Ann & Iain

Hello :-)
I've wanted to go to Vietnam and Halong Bay in particular for a while now, sounds great! Not so good that it's getting a bit polluted now though :(
I've got a great image in my head of you two in a kayak going round in circles, dad blind as a bat and mum shouting commands from the starboard bow... fab. You know you can attach a piece of string to each end of your glasses with gaffa tape or equivalent and they'll stay round your neck if they fall off that way. Just a suggestion.
I have a question for you - do you know where my stereo system is? Did you guys take it up to mossley for safe-keeping when I was in colchester? Cos I've got no music system now! Was hoping to retrieve it when visit hils at xmas though it depends if ryan can drive me up or not.
Anyway, let me know, and keep enjoying yourselves! When is it you get back again?
Lots of love, Lizzy xxxx

Howdy travellers.

I'd be happy going anywhere at the moment! ( lead from Lizzy's piece).
Well..... Andy has started DJ(ing) I'm very sorry dad but your office has been turned in to a music studio! (not for long hopefully! at least it keeps him out of trouble ha ha. Erin and I have only 1 week left of school before we break up for christmas :( and then it's exams already!! I'm going out for Miss Marjorie's 60th birthday bash on Monday which should be fun and then there are many many work doos over the next few weeks. Paul is coming here for Christmas dinner although he won't get in with his wheelchair, do you know where the manual is? Phoebe is still sleeping through every night up to 15 hrs! I'm going to start weaning her in the next week or 2. I'm not prepared for Christmas at all i've lost half a stone in 3 weeks though! lol Erin was a shepherd in the nativity at the George Lawton Hall last night which was lovely. Hopefully I will have a new kitchen ceiling & lights for christmas! Hope you are both well, it sounds like your enjoying yourself i'm so jealous! Love to you both and speak to you over Christmas. xxx
